Lighting Planning

Before any shooting commenced, I had tested out lighting and compositions at my filming location...

Since there was a dark theme to my story, I was lucky to have a shooting location lit quite dynamically. Lampposts and trees brought a cool sense of aesthetic with sharp and dark shadows on the streets. At night, all the solar lights in the area turn on, and creates a decent atmosphere for filming. shot a couple of videos to play with silhouettes on my phone...

The following two videos were shot on a mist night, which was the time intended for the film, but too bad the actors were only available next week, and I'd eventually loose the opportunity to film in the beautiful mist, because the weather was changing.

considering It was a foggy night on the night I walked out for test shots, The effect of light was very different and soft. It gave off a blurry effect, which would've been amazing to shoot with, but unfortunately, the weather changed, and took the mist away.

I was very interested to explore the term chiaroscuro lighting, which is a technique use by many filmmakers. It is an Italian term that popularized by many Renaissance painters such as Caravaggio and Leonardo Da Vinci, in their paintings. It uses minimal but bright light, usually from one direction of the object or character, and creates high contrast shadows. It can be used to create depth and definition in a shot. I'll be using this technique in some shots of my film, as it makes very visual pleasing shots.
