Imagery and Sound

Finalizing the editing for my film opening...

Premiere Pro was a challenge to edit on but I made my way through. I had already made a demo edit on my iPad with the app called Videoleap, so that I knew where I was going.

I arranged the clips accordingly, to catch all the continuity and pace of the scenes, and color graded to my liking. I had originally shot a film that turned out to be up to 4 minutes, so I had to cut out some scenes to fit the required time. After all that I still ended up with a Final Cut of 2 minute 45 seconds. Since it was a horror genre, I went with a cool and desaturated tone, to follow the horror movie convention. Although I intended to add a misty effect, I think it looked fine without it, as the details and visual information (e.g the podcast) wouldn't be clear. I just wish the mist was there that night, but it drizzled instead, and I missed the opportunity, but glad it worked out.

For the text, I used simple fonts for the opening credits so they are easily readable and don't distract the viewer from the visuals of the film. I came up with a fictional production company name called PHOBOPHILMS. "Phobo" as in from "Phobia" which means fear, and "Philms" is just a respelled "Films" to complete the alliteration :) The main title wasn't a font, but a handwritten digital PNG image, that i placed over the video. I had made it on Procreate on my iPad.

For most the audio, I used the app called Garageband on my iPad. It's a wonderful app for professional music makers, but since I'm not one, I used it's basic features to improve my sound. For the folly sounds, I used Voice Memos on my phone, and on Garageband, I used Noise Gate to remove the noise and only filter the sound. I used folly sounds for the footsteps, the objects, and the panting of Alden. Unfortunately my swing and bicycle made no proper sounds a normal swing or bicycle would make, so I took those from YouTube :)
Also for the cracking as the antagonist turns its head, I tried using the sound of my knuckles cracking, but it sounded weird, so yeah found some wet celery breaking sounds online, and it was perfect!

Additionally, my whole opening is based on screams, and I thought if I do those myself, It'll make my project true to myself. So yeah, I can't believe I recorded the strangest sounds I could produce from my mouth and use them in my foundation portfolio. Using features like reverb and echo, I added more depth to the screams and it helped them appear more cinematic. And there it was, screams of horrors!
